With so many conceptions of strategy, it is little wonder that confusion is more common than clarity. Business consultants and management advisors are as common and their methodologies as diverse as autumn leaves or spring blossom. And for the most part, their "methodology" will withstand scrutiny to about the same extent the leaves and blossom resist the wind. So what is uniquely valuable about the TMG process? First, the process we use is designed to enable your leadership team to collectively and confidently answer two questions;
Second, these two questions are maintaining your focus on the really big issues. How are you different and better in your ability to deliver to market needs. Why will the market yield more value to you than your competitors. Simulataneously, how are you able harness and leverage your internal resources and capabilties to deliver this 'better difference'? Why will you be able to sustain such an advantage through to return on investment and beyond? We use many of the strategy frameworks with which you will be familiar. But our approach helps you and your managers develop more effective strategic thinking. This is not a naive process. It is informed by more than 50 strategy frameworks and tools that may be useful. Which of them you use and when they might be appropriate however, grows out of what your organization needs and not some pre-determined 'methodology' we impose on you. For example, where branded consumer goods marketing might benefit from "positioning strategy", professional services might be better served by a "resourced based view". Where the industry growth rate is high, innovation may not be as important right now as channels and competitors. If there is uncertainty around the Vision, the use of the "hedgehog" might be a great way to find clarity. If your managers are yet to form the kinds of working relationships that enable them to give freely of their best work, then we might need to apply some Gestalt techniques in developing the group's working process. If the potential change issues are significant for people, we may be advising you to allow some Tavistock techniques to inform the groups processes. Even the language being used here is encouraging strategic thinking, without assuming there is some 'prescription' to the challenges and solutions particular to your organization. Very quickly, your strategy development process will feel lke it is based on clear, strategic thinking. Importantly, it will be a strategy development process customized to your business and your situation. That's why we don't have a set methodology so much as a large kit of strategy frameworks from which we will choose with you, the right tools for the job. It will draw on and be informed by plenty of experience and use structured and tested approaches for analysis, engagement and decision making. But it will be tailored to you.To find out more about the T | M | G consulting process, you can browse this web site.
