Whilst it is important not to be constrained by a benchmark (as if it were the best that can be done) it is equally important to be aware of how you perform against other relevant or comparable executive teams.

Define who competes in your market

This is a quick and easy thing to do by creating a simple inventory of competitors. List them by product market, estimating the size of each and characterising how they compete (on price or if differentiated, in what way). In TMG’s experience, most clients elect to add some of our other recommended data points to support later strategic analysis.
